A young scholar enters his dissertation defense with a dangerous claim: the African Diaspora carries a radical spiritual power capable of protection, resistance, and world-making.
As his thesis unfolds, the room breaks open — carrying us from the Bight of Bonny to the auction block, from Selma to Carter G. Woodson, from ancestral memory to a Harlem classroom where the spirits of children swell the room. Part church play, part academic defense, Awoken asks what history looks like when the dead, the living, and the unborn all testify.
